Ashtanga Yoga
A path of conduct towards enlightenment laid out by Sri Pantanjali known as the eight limbs. One of the Limbs is ‘Asana’ - postures practiced in all Hatha Yoga classes.
What stems to confuse the novice is that Ashtanga also refers to one specific kind of Hatha Yoga. Developed by Patabhi Jois, an Ashtanga Yoga class vigorously sequences the same set of postures (according to series) with the breath.
Just to confuse you some more most other forms of yoga are also ‘eight limbed’. Iyengar yoga taught by BKS Iyengar is based on the eight limbs ie – yama’s, niyama’s, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, Samadhi. An Iyengar style yoga class focuses on form as opposed to flow and uses props to create good alignment, such as blocks, belts, chairs, blankets, wall etc. This is ideal for the everyday inflexible person with the all too common chronic back pain. |
